Ep. 117

Welcome to the 2023 Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Seriespart 9

Melanoma not only affects the individual diagnosed with this disease, but it also has a significant impact on their family and loved ones. In this heartfelt conversation, my guest, Dee Conway shares her story about her sister Rose and the diagnosis of melanoma that ended her life within just 6 months. The emotional toll of melanoma can be overwhelming. Today we discuss the importance of early detection, the dangers of tanning beds, and the need for more education about skin cancer. Dee’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting your skin and taking steps to prevent melanoma.

The loss of her sister at the young age of 35, inspired her to become an advocate for sun safety and melanoma awareness. Dee’s advocacy work through the Melanoma Research Foundation and in Washington DC for the state of Arizona shows Her efforts have helped to educate others and to hopefully prevent them from experiencing these tragedies.

We’ll explore the importance of being an advocate for yourself in the medical world and discuss the dangers of hyperprogressive disease, which can occur as a side effect of immunotherapy.

I remember thinking like I’m 29, hearing the word cancer like that, that’s scary. But I will tell you, it still didn’t register with me that I need to protect my skin. I still lack that, that knowledge of sun protection and just that knowledge that I should have had. And so at some point, when Rose was diagnosed, I had actually not gone to a dermatologist in about five years. That was because I was a busy mom dealing with family life and all that and put my own health off to the side

Dee also shares her own experience with skin cancer and the seriousness of this often overlooked condition. Through Dee’s mission to educate and her sister’s journey, we aim to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of seeking proper medical care.

Discover Dee’s favorite sun protection products and how you can reduce your risk of skin cancer by piecing together UPF apparel from different companies.

The strength of the bond between sisters came through in this conversation about Dee’s heartbreaking loss of Rose. I could relate to the emotions Dee feels while fighting for a cause so close to her heart. The importance of skin cancer prevention and sharing personal stories, like Dee’s, can inspire others to take action and choose to be proactive when it comes to protecting themselves from the sun.

Skin Cancer Advocacy

  • Know the signs
The first step in skin cancer advocacy is to educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of skin cancer. This includes checking your skin regularly for any new or changing moles, spots, or lesions. If you notice anything suspicious, make an appointment with a dermatologist as soon as possible.
  • Wear sunscreen
One of the most effective ways to prevent skin cancer is to wear sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it generously to all exposed skin. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
  • Seek shade
When spending time outdoors, seek shade whenever possible. This can include sitting under a tree, using an umbrella, or wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Avoid being outside during peak sun hours, typically between 10am and 4pm.
  • Spread awareness
Spread awareness about skin cancer by sharing information with your friends and family. This can include sharing articles or social media posts about the importance of sun safety, or simply reminding loved ones to wear sunscreen and seek shade.
  • Support skin cancer research
Support skin cancer research by donating to organizations that are working to find a cure. You can also participate in fundraising events or volunteer your time to help raise awareness and funds for skin cancer research.
  • Advocate for policy change
Advocate for policy change by contacting your elected officials and urging them to support legislation that promotes sun safety and skin cancer prevention. This can include measures such as requiring schools to allow students to wear sunscreen, or increasing funding for skin cancer research.
  • Take care of your skin
Finally, take care of your own skin by practicing good skincare habits. This includes using gentle cleansers and moisturizers, avoiding harsh chemicals and exfoliants, and staying hydrated. By taking care of your own skin, you can set an example for others and help prevent skin cancer.
