Welcome to the 2023 Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Series – part 12
Imagine having to hear the disheartening words – “You have cancer” not once, but four times. That’s precisely the journey my incredible guest Jennifer Schultz has been on. Jenn has battled through the physical and mental toll of her diagnosis, bravely facing feelings of isolation, guilt, anxiety and the struggle to ask for help. As a writer, educator, and speaker, she’s transformed her arduous journey into powerful advocacy for melanoma education, awareness, and access to care for those without the same resources.
But battling cancer doesn’t end with becoming cancer-free. On the contrary, survivorship brings with it a whole new set of challenges. Jennifer shares her ongoing journey of survival, discussing the lingering anxiety of skin checks and the unique challenges of living with melanoma.
“
…I really struggled at the beginning. That first surgery I hadn’t even thought about the scars, surprisingly and that first day of the surgery I was pretty out of it. But then the next day I got up and looked in the mirror and I just like sobbed because I wasn’t prepared at all for what I was going to see. And because the melanoma was on my right shoulder there’s just not a lot of skin there in general. So they actually did have a plastic surgeon come in to stitch it to make sure that it was going to heal. Having lymph nodes removed from both the side of my neck and my shoulder, I was like “I look like Frankenstein”. That was all I could think. And I was like, oh my gosh, I was so distraught by it because I was so caught off guard by it....
”
Jenn is passionate about spreading melanoma awareness and educating her community on sun safety. She is a certified melanoma educator through the Melanoma Research Foundation and a cancer advocate with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), working to make patient experiences and outcomes better through legislative change both locally and nationally.
Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that can have devastating effects on those who are diagnosed with it. However, by making changes in perception and education, we can turn the fear of melanoma into power. This involves educating people about the importance of sun safety, promoting regular skin checks, and encouraging early detection. By increasing awareness about the risks of melanoma and the steps that individuals can take to protect themselves, we can empower people to take control of their health and reduce their risk of developing this deadly disease.
With a combination of education and action, we can work towards a future where melanoma is no longer a source of fear, but a challenge that we are equipped to face head-on.

Understanding Melanoma 🖤
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that begins in the pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. It is considered to be the most dangerous form of skin cancer due to its ability to spread rapidly to other parts of the body if not detected and treated early.
There are several risk factors that can increase the chances of developing melanoma, including excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, having fair skin, a history of sunburns, a family history of melanoma, and having numerous moles or unusual moles.
Early detection is crucial for successful treatment of melanoma. It is important to regularly check your skin for any changes in existing moles or the appearance of new moles, as well as any suspicious spots or growths. If you notice any changes or abnormalities, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist for a thorough examination.
Treatment options for melanoma depend on several factors, including the stage of the cancer, the location and size of the tumor, and the individual’s overall health. Treatment may involve surgical removal of the tumor, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these approaches.
Prevention and early detection are key to reducing the risk of melanoma and improving outcomes. This includes:
– Wearing protective clothing and sunscreen when outdoors
– Avoiding tanning beds and excessive sun exposure
– Getting regular skin checks from a dermatologist
– Knowing the signs and symptoms of melanoma and seeking medical attention if any changes are noticed
If you have concerns about melanoma or notice any changes in your skin, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance. Remember, early detection and prevention are crucial in the fight against melanoma.
